Do you know that your mood and energy levels are adversely affected when your glucose levels are high? Diabetes can be a life-changing disease caused when the insulin hormone does not properly regulate glucose in the body. More than 34 million Americans have diabetes, and approximately 90-95% of them have type 2 diabetes. If you have been just diagnosed with type-2 diabetes, there are many things to keep in mind to ensure your blood sugar levels are always under control!

7 Things To Keep In Mind!

#1. Avoid drinks with lots of added sugars unless you have low blood sugar, also called hypoglycemia. Also staying away from carbohydrates, regular soda and large amounts of fruit juice is a wise choice.

#2. Avoid all refined and processed foods, especially packaged snacks, foods, or drinks.

#3. Make sure you fill half your plate with veggies or salad, one-third portion of your complex carbohydrates, and the other one-third portion with protein sources. This way you get to practice portion control of foods your intake.

#4. Add more low glycemic index foods to your diet.

#5. Add healthy fats and protein to your meals to balance the sugar levels.

#6. Incorporate physical activity into your routine. You could include aerobic or cardiovascular activity that benefits the heart and lungs (swimming, dancing, walking, biking, stair-climbing), resistance or strength training (pulling, pushing, lifting), flexibility, and stretching.

#7. Use blood glucose testing to keep track of your blood glucose levels at any given time. Regular testing helps you to identify high and low levels of glucose levels before the condition can cause serious problems. Also, it helps you to access how well your body is reacting to insulin therapy, exercise, and meal planning.
