No doubt that you would have heard of antioxidants! They’ve been associated with everything from reducing cancer risks to slowing aging. But what exactly are these powerful disease-fighters, and how can you ensure you’re getting enough?

Antioxidants: the disease-preventing health-boosters are naturally found in foods, especially plant foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. And they are known to neutralize the free radicals by which they prevent disease and damage from happening within the body.

How Can You Get Enough Antioxidants?

#1. Take In Varieties Of Veggies

Most plant compounds such as polyphenols, and carotenoids act as antioxidants or boost antioxidant activity. Strawberries, citrus, carrots, bell peppers, sweet potatoes, and dark leafy greens are some examples of products rich in antioxidant vitamin C, vitamin E or beta-carotene. Make sure to mix it up and take in enough amount of these veggies!

#2. Enjoy Herbs & Spices

Herbs and spices such as rosemary, ginger, and turmeric are packed with antioxidants. Even if we use them in small doses, they boost both flavor and free-radical-fighting potential.

#3. Crack Some Nuts

Nuts and seeds like almonds and sunflower seeds are great sources of vitamin E. Brazil nuts are rich in selenium. Put them on salads or snacks on a handful mixed with dried fruits.

#4. Drink Up Antioxidants

Green and black teas are rich in antioxidants, and coffee is too. Red wine, cranberry, grape, and cherry juices are antioxidant-rich choices as well. Matcha, a type of green tea made from powdered tea leaves, is a particularly rich source. If you don’t like the taste, try adding a little to yogurts or smoothies.

#5. Say No To Free-Radical-Forming Foods

Along with eating foods rich in antioxidants, cut back or eliminate foods that have been associated with the creation of free radicals, such as sugars, refined carbohydrates, processed meats (like sausage), red meat, deep-fried foods, and too much alcohol. It’s also wise to avoid smoking.
